So, how do the Wool Dryer Balls work?
Basically, the Wool Dryer Balls tumble throughout the load of laundry. This allows more aerated drying to occur during your drying cycle. What does that mean exactly? Well, picture your load of wet laundry and stuck to one another. Now picture it in the dryer as it tumbles as one big wad of wet clothing. Now picture a few wool dryer balls bouncing in between the layers of clothing – separating them with their weight and motion and allowing air circulation. Get the idea? This process also allows your dryer to circulate more hot air and expel the evaporated water out of the dryer more efficiently. The Wool Dryer Balls also absorb some of the moisture from your clothing too! Towards the end of the cycle, once the load is dry, the balls will naturally release a bit of the moisture which helps reduce wrinkles in your clothing! The end result is that your laundry will dry much faster and your clothes will feel much drier and wrinkle free when the cycle is complete!
In addition, Wool Dryer Balls also prevent static cling! Static build up occurs when fabric cling together. However, the Wool Dryer Balls prevents this by separating the fabrics and absorbing the moisture from them. So a win-win on all fronts with these amazing balls!
So, how many Wool Dryer Balls do I need?
We recommend 4-6 Wool Dryer Balls for an average load size. These balls are handcrafted and will last thousands of washes! Each ball weighs between .5 -1.0 oz. They are roughly the size of a tennis ball. They are also safe for cloth diapers, sweaters and towels.
So, how long do Wool Dryer Balls last for?
We recommend replacing wool dryer balls approximately every 1,000 loads. However, you will also know it is time to replace wool dryer balls once as they will start showing a diminished size. With an average of 4-6 balls used for 1000 loads, you are roughly looking at least a couple of years of use! WOW!!!
Are the Wool Dryer Balls 100% Wool?
The Wool Dryer Balls offered by Birdie’s Room are solid 100% Wool. No fillers! Many wool dryer balls have a plastic/rubber core Not these! In addition, our balls are dyed with NATURAL dye! Logwood, Fusticwood, Cochineal, and Madder Root. They are felted, which means they will never fall apart.
Can I scent my Wool Dryer Balls?
Absolutely! However, we do recommend that a few precautions are taken. We recommend that essential oils on the Wool Dryer Balls are used during a non heated tumble dry setting only. Heating essential oils to a high temperature in a clothes dryer has in some cases caused fires. It is rare, but we like to proceed with caution even when there is even a rare risk! A great way to do this is dry your clothes as normal and stop the cycle about 10-20 minutes before the end. Add the scented balls at this point and proceed with a tumble dry – no heat cycle for the remainder of the cycle. This method is not as efficient as a non-scented cycle, but for those that love the light, natural scent of essential oils on your fabrics, this is an amazing way to incorporate it!
So, how much essential oil do I add? The answer is not much at all! Essential oils are powerful concentrated substances. You don’t need much at all! 1-2 drops added to a ball is usually more than enough. Add the EO to the ball and let it sit to absorb fully and dry for a minimum of 20 minutes. We recommend adding the EO of your choice to a bottle of water with a sprayer. Shake well to disperse the oil within the water and spray the ball evenly. Let dry and voila!
If you choose to use essential oils, always research which oils are safe to be used in this capacity especially around children and animals. A great and informative website for using essential oils safety can be found at Using EO Safely
Kids love these, and pets too!
Be aware! You might find your soft and snuggly balls missing from the laundry room! They are a fun and natural toy for kids and pets too!
Allergic to wool?
No problem! An allergy to wool is usually a contact allergy. So although a wool sweater may not be your friend, felted wool balls work differently and have been kind to those with allergies.
