Didymos is famous for their woven wrap products but they also carry over their amazing reputation for high quality in a selection of jersey stretch knit wraps. Didymos is unique in their offering as they are one of a very few manufacturers to offer an 100% organic cotton jersey knit wrap.
Didymos has offered three types jersey stretch wrap options to select from – the original Hybrid Jersey Wrap, the new Double Face Hybrid Jersey Wrap and the Double Face Jersey Stretchy Wrap.
The “Original” Hybrid Jersey Wrap & the “New” Double Face Hybrid Jersey Wrap
The Original Hybrid Jersey Wrap was offered by Didymos for several years but is no longer being produced. Although, you may still find them available with some didymos approved retailers and on the second hand market. They were offered in a selection of solid colours with one standard length and width – 5.4 m long (roughly a standard size 7) by 60 cm – 66cm wide (24” – 26″ wide) and is considered a hybrid stretch wrap that can be used from newborn to preschool age in front, hip and back carries. They are featured in a solid colour range including beige, blue, green and red.
Recently, Didymos introduced a new design for their Hybrid Jersey Wrap which features a double face weave where one the two sides are different. For example, the very popular Stars Hybrid Jersey Wrap features stars on one side and a solid colour on the opposite side. They follow the same specifications as the original hybrid jersey wrap and are ideal for carrying newborns right up to pre-school age!
What exactly is a hybrid, you ask?
A hybrid wrap is a wrap that looks and feels like most stretchy wraps on the market but it possesses unique qualities that combines some of the characteristics of a stretchy wrap and a woven wrap. Most stretchy wraps in the marketplace are comprised of synthetic materials which include stretchy fibres that wear out over time, such as spandex. The DIDYMOS Hybrid Jersey wrap, on the other hand, is…
- Made from 100% organic cotton which is woven in a knitted weave to provide both diagonal and width-wise stretch.
- There is NO lengthwise stretch which in turn provides stability to the fabric.
- The hems are finished (double rolled over and stitched) rather than a simple zig-zag over the cut edge of the fabric, as is the case with Stretchy wraps.
- With the special fabric and weave, and the finished hems, a Hybrid allows the wrap to be more supportive with less stretch and sag than a typical Stretchy wrap.
- Since the top and bottom rails are secure with the hemmed stitching, a Hybrid can be used for back carries since the fabric will NOT roll down which is common with most Stretchy wraps.
Another great reason to choose a Hybrid Jersey Wrap is that a hybrid can be used from newborn right up to toddler age. Many other brand regular stretchy wraps may sag and become uncomfortable at around 3-6 months of age or around the 15-20lb mark. The Didymos Hybrid Jersey Wrap combines the appeal of a stretch wrap and the strength and versatility of a woven wrap.
The real difference between most regular stretchy wraps in the marketplace and the Didymos Hybrid Jersey Wrap lies with the way the material stretches, finishing, elasticity and carry options. What makes a wrap a hybrid stretch is that the material has no lengthwise stretch so the top and bottom tails are supportive without a tendency to fold over or roll. In addition, the top and bottom rails are hemmed for additional strength and support. Whereas with a regular stretch wrap, the wrap has no hemmed rails and the fabric has lengthwise stretch.
The hybrid wrap fabric also has an elasticity to it so that it stretches and then springs back to mold to both the wearer and baby’s bodies. Many regular stretch wraps have this as well but the elasticity is not as substantial and tends to sag over time which subsequently causes discomfort for the wearer and baby not being in an optimal position. There are only a couple of hybrid stretch wrap makers on the market, with Didymos being the only one that provides a 100% organic cotton hybrid stretch wrap. While Didymos recommends that when using their stretch hybrid wrap that the wearer always use carries that provides three layers of fabric or three passes of fabric, the carries are not limited to just front carries as with a regular stretch wrap. The strength of the top of bottom rails allows the wearer to do front, hip and back carries! With a regular stretch wrap, any other carry other than front carries are strongly not recommended due to safety reasons. The lengthwise stretch with most regular stretch wraps can fold or roll if the baby leans back. In addition, most regular stretchy wraps have a narrow width which would not be safe for back wearing nor ideal for some when wearing older children. Didymos hybrids feature a standard wrap width that we see in most woven wraps these days!
To demonstrate the strength of the Didymos Hybrid Jersey Wrap, a fellow educator and friend carried my 6 year old for approximately fifteen minutes where he wiggled, straightened, leaned and even flung himself backwards to test the strength of the wrap and how the top rail performed under this pressure. It passed the test with flying colours! The top rail did not fold or roll and the body of the wrap fabric did not cave or sag. It held tight and secure!
Jersey Stretchy Wrap
The Double-Faced Striped Stretchy Jersey wraps are a new addition to Didymos’s Jersey wrap collection. These wraps currently feature narrow stripes in alternating colours on one side and a solid colour on the reverse side. The length remains consistent with the original jersey but the width is narrower at 52 cm wide (20.5” wide) making it an ideal choice for newborns and small babies as there is less fabric bulk. It is made from knit fabric of 100% organic cotton and features a double-fold, finished hem for optimal support. The nature of the knit weave creates optimal elasticity and are ideal to comfortably and securely support and carry very small and lightweight babies from a healthy newborn age to about 12 months (up to 9Kg/20 lbs).
The Double-Face Stretchy is slightly narrower than the average stretchy or woven wrap width making it perfect for newborn wearing, and for the first year. The fabric is light and easy to tie with less bulk. This wrap is soft and floppy as is the nature of a stretchy but offers the adequate support when used within the weight range in front cross carries such as the Front Wrap Cross Carry or the Pocket Wrap Cross Carry. These particular wraps should not be used in any other carry and should always have the cross passes spread.
Where are the DIDYMOS Jersey wraps manufactured?
The Didymos stretchy, Jersey Wraps are knitted in a family-run company in Southern Germany, in a region who once was renowned for its weaving and knitting tradition. Unfortunately, only very few of these small textile companies could stand up to and compete with the international textile giants. They survived by consequently manufacturing products that are ecologically sound and of top quality.
Wash and Care Instructions
Didymos Jersey Wraps are very easy to care. You can wash them at temperatures up to 60°C. They are suited for dry-spin and tumbling.
